Imagine finding a path you’ve walked for decades—a pleasant, convenient shortcut used by some residents for up to 40 years—suddenly closed. That’s exactly what happened in September 2023 to a beloved right of way that goes from Bramston Close in Great Baddow.
This closure was a shock, given the path’s considerable and long history. But the spirit of Great Baddow residents is not easily dampened! A group of concerned locals immediately stepped up to take action.

Residents rallied and convened meetings, forming a WhatsApp group for swift communication, and researched a clear plan of action.
Their goal was to have the path formally recognised. They meticulously put together an application to modify the definitive map—the official record of public rights of way. This wasn’t a quick task; it involved gathering evidence from the very people who have used the path for so long. The group managed to submit some 35 application forms with supporting evidence to Essex County Council, asking for the path to be formally added to the Public Rights Of Way (PROW) register as a footpath.
The standard waiting time for such applications to be processed is a staggering five years. The local group knew the community couldn’t wait that long.
Fortunately, they received considerable help from former MP Vicky Ford and Essex County Councillor Anthony McQuiggan. With their assistance, the residents successfully lobbied Essex County Council to give the application the urgent attention it deserved. This collaboration proved vital in speeding up the process.
All that hard work and community spirit has paid off! While the final confirmation is still pending, the initial decision is to grant the application. Best of all, we’re absolutely delighted to report that the path is once again accessible and in use!
This success story is a testament to what a determined local community can achieve.
It’s a fantastic facility for all users and provides a picturesque walk that connects you to the meads and the city centre. By using it, you help cement its status as a vital part of our local network of footpaths.
